How to clean and care for dentures
A regular cleaning routine helps you care for your dentures and mouth. Follow the instructions for your denture material.
A simple daily routine
- Handle dentures over a towel or water filled basin to reduce damage if dropped.
- Rinse food away and brush gently with a soft denture brush and suitable non abrasive denture cleaner.
- Clean your gums, tongue and palate gently. Brush natural teeth with fluoride toothpaste.
- Rinse dentures well before putting them back in.
Storage and overnight care
Give your mouth a rest as your provider advises. Keep removable dentures moist when out of your mouth, using water or a compatible soaking solution. Do not use hot or boiling water because it can change their shape. Metal parts, soft liners and implant attachments may need different products.
When cleaning is not enough
Ask for a review if you notice recurring soreness, damage or a changing fit. A provider can assess your mouth and dentures together.
